Concrete Landscapes
As a response many Hong Kongers leaving the city, and the changing and development of old streets and land, Phoebe R records everyday scenes of Hong Kong on to miniature canvases. These pocket-sized pieces may then be tucked safely into luggage and taken away. They are fragments of Hong Kong emerging all over the world with the diaspora who collect them. The miniature size allows her to quickly and meticulously capture as many places as possible in detail. Something she feels a compulsion to do as so much can change so suddenly. It also drives the intense focus of the viewer. “I would like to invite people to look very closely and cherish the beauty found in the ordinary moments that make Hong Kong so truly unique”.
Acrylic on canvas, framed in concrete, 2024.
The frames are hand made by a local frame master; expertly crafted over several weeks, working with Hong Kong’s humidity and materials. Each piece is unique and finished with the highest care and consideration for detail. Amusingly quite the opposite of how this material is usually worked with.
“Through her innovative techniques and storytelling prowess, Phoebe R successfully captures the essence of Hong Kong, making her pieces resonate on multiple levels with viewers globally”.
